Imperial College London, one of the world’s top-10 ranked schools, is jumping into the realm of online learning with Coursera. As a one-of-a-kind institution, Imperial focuses on science, engineering, medicine, and business – and we’re excited to bring the school’s world-leading expertise to learners on Coursera.

“The world faces massive shortages in critical job skills that will only worsen if we don’t create new ways for people to quickly and affordably learn these skills,” said Deanna Raineri, Coursera’s Chief Academic Officer. “Coursera is thrilled to welcome its newest partner Imperial College London, a world-leading education and research institution, to help it address the world’s growing demand for high-quality education beyond the confines of traditional on-campus degree programs.”

Imperial is joining Coursera to reach a wider audience, particularly among people looking to gain cutting-edge skills in topics like machine learning and artificial intelligence. Imperial’s researchers are leaders in these fields, like Professor Maja Pantic, who is developing a humanoid robot called Zeno that can improve learning and emotional understanding in children with autism, or Professor Mark Girolami, who develops advanced novel statistical methodology driven by applications in the life, clinical, physical, chemical, engineering and ecological sciences.

True to its world-renowned excellence in STEM, Imperial’s debut courses on Coursera in the Mathematics for Machine Learning Specialization are designed to be a gateway that will enable millions of people to prepare for more advanced topics in data science and artificial intelligence. The series of courses is taught by Professor David Dye (Department of Materials), Dr. Sam Cooper (Dyson School of Design Engineering), Dr. Marc Deisenroth (Department of Computing) and Dr. A. Freddie Page (Dyson School of Design Engineering). The courses cover fundamental skills such as linear algebra, vector calculus, and analytic geometry, which are all key ingredients for many machine learning algorithms that power artificial intelligence.

“The scale, speed and complexity of the changes AI has brought are unprecedented, but the opportunities are endless,” said Professor Simone Buitendijk, the College’s Vice-Provost for Education. “As a globally connected university, Imperial is keenly aware that we must play our part in teaching AI courses that provide learners, whether they are College students or not, with a compelling impetus to become the AI experts of the future.”

The number of available jobs in AI and data science increases substantially every year, and
there is a clear shortage of skilled applicants. Imperial is addressing this gap by going
online to make these skills accessible to anyone, anywhere.
