Students who take the upcoming FutureLearn course ‘Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching’ will be eligible for a scholarship. This four week free online course from University of Southampton and the British Council started on November 17th.

The news follows the success of the British Council’s first English language course on FutureLearn, which attracted over 120,000 people, and led to record figures for engagement and participation.

Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching
This course will provide an insight into some of the latest research and practices in language learning and teaching. Aimed at anyone with an interest in the way language is taught, ‘Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching’ will also investigate the case of English, as the most widely learnt and taught language in the world.

MA in English Language Teaching
This two and half year (5 semesters) masters degree program is offered entirely online to teachers around the world. It offers postgraduate level study in key areas of current theory and practice in Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching.

Students who complete more than half of the course steps and all the assessments of the above mentioned FL course will be eligible to apply for a scholarship.

Scholarships will be awarded by the lead academics on the online MA programme, by judging applicants’ personal statements. The scholarship would cover first year fees of 2.5year online programme which costs £7500.

Simon Nelson, Chief Executive of FutureLearn said, “These scholarships from the University of Southampton are a fine example of potential of free online courses to create routes from informal to formal learning. “As well as creating a pathway to the full MA programme, the course ‘Understanding Language: Learning and Teaching’ promises to give our learners around the world another high quality learning experience as a part of FutureLearn’s English Language offering, and follows the resounding success of the first course from the British Council.”

Hello everyone,

We have only just set up a MOOC service for learners and teachers. Our platform runs on Chamilo LMS and it is open for anyone who would like to share what they know. Chamilo enables you to register yourself as a teacher or a learner. In other words, you do not need our approval to start designing your own courses and lessons. It is - and will always be - free to join and create courses. There is no limit whatsoever as far as the number of courses, participants or lessons are concerned. We are a small group of lecturers and we are not supported by a cooperation or an institution. Frankly, we will learn alongside with our participants.

A small number of courses have already been added and are available for learners. We especially suggest the course for the TOEFL iBT. Please feel free to visit and join us.

We hope to see you in our platform and we wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Udemy has published a press release announcing the enrollment of its 5 millionth student. Udemy is a global leading platform for online learning and teaching founded in 2010.

Key points from the press release dated 17th December 2014:

  • The milestone caps off a year of unprecedented growth for the online learning marketplace, including a 213 percent student increase, the addition of 6,000 new instructors and a course library that more than doubled in size. People across the globe are recognizing the power of online learning to fuel their personal and professional lives at an unprecedented rate; since its founding in 2010, Udemy students have enrolled in 13.4 million courses.

  • Udemy's corporate learning platform, Udemy for Business, has also experienced tremendous growth in 2014. The number of Udemy for Business courses more than tripled, contributing to a year-over-year revenue growth rate of more than 288 percent and a customer base that grew by more than 169 percent, including customer wins like Lyft, Eventbrite, PepsiCo and IBM. Additionally, the Udemy for Business team doubled in size this year under the leadership of Paul Sebastien, who was hired this year as Vice President and General Manager of Udemy for Business.

  • Udemy plans to expand its growing international presence in 2015. Revenue in India and Germany each grew 300 percent over 2013. Students in virtually every country on the planet already rely on Udemy to help them get the skills they need, and Udemy will work to further localize its product, language and payments over the next year. Today, Udemy courses are available in over 40 languages and 67 percent of Udemy students reside outside of the United States.

In 2013, Coursera offered nearly half of all MOOCs, but in 2014 its share has shrunk to a third. It is still twice as large as the runner-up, edX, which doubled its share in the last year (and now has close to 400 courses on its platform). There were no major providers launched in 2014.

MiriadaX became the first non-U.S. MOOC provider to cross 1 million registered users, tapping into the large Spanish-speaking market worldwide. UK based provider FutureLearn with 800K registered users should be the next provider to cross a million users.

Did someone try to take Alison course. I did few, they're fine but they're lacking content.
I have feeling that they, just created site to make money on certificate.
What's your opinion,

Hi @Nedzad . Personally, I haven't taken any Alison courses, but I agree with your point about people creating MOOC platforms purely as a means to make money with no concern for quality. This gives MOOCs a bad reputation.
