MicroMasters Programs

In September, we launched 19 MicroMasters programs, from 14 international universities. The MicroMasters programs are a new category of Master’s-level online education developed to bridge the knowledge gap between higher education and the workplace.

MicroMasters programs offer in-demand knowledge and a cost-effective, flexible pathway to an accelerated on-campus program or to career advancement. Offered in subjects ranging from artificial intelligence (from ColumbiaX) to project management (from RITx) and supply chain management (from MITx), MicroMasters courses are created by our esteemed university partners, valued by top companies and linked to specific career outcomes.

MicroMasters programs also democratize access to Master’s-level content and create an evolutionary pathway to universities’ Master’s degree. Shorter in length than a traditional Master’s program, the modular MicroMasters programs enable learners to begin down a path of advanced study in an affordable and flexible manner.

The launch of MicroMasters programs was a huge accomplishment for edX and our partners in 2016 and we look forward to bringing you more programs in 2017!

New Partners and Partnerships

Also, in 2016, we welcomed new, global partners to edX. We now offer courses from more than 110 institutions, including exciting new partners such as the University of Oxford, Babson College, Imperial College of London, University of Newcastle and many more. We look forward to working with our partners and achieving continued success in 2017!

In February, we partnered with Kiron, a nonprofit organization based in Germany with a mission to enable access to free higher education for refugees. With this new partnership, our joint efforts will help improve the lives of thousands of newly arrived Syrian and other refugees in Europe, and around the world, by offering a pathway to earning free college credit and degrees. Kiron will integrate 300 edX courses into its learning platform. EdX will issue free verified certificates for Kiron students who have successfully completed these courses, and those certificates will translate to college credit with Kiron’s university campus partners.
