What makes you think that someone who started at an early age is any good at their craft? Achievement has several components. Natural talent is one, motivation is one, and time-in-seat is one. Natural talent is quite important for people with no experience. Time-in-seat becomes increasingly important up to about 10,000 hours. After that, motivation rules, though natural talent still plays a role. While I wouldn’t advise a person one year from retirement to take up programming as a profession, experience in other areas may be reusable in programming, giving them an advantage versus someone just starting their career.
