Last year, a group of Coursera employees came together to answer what felt like an increasingly pressing question: how could we, as an education technology company, play a larger role in addressing the social issues that threaten stability around the world?
We were proud of the progress we’d made with initiatives like Coursera for Refugees. But we also wanted to raise awareness of the problems that lead to inequality, and of the ways each of us can contribute to solutions. We believe that understanding a problem is the first step toward creating change—and we wanted to empower our learners to learn about and act on the issues that impact their families, businesses, and communities.
We issued a call to action to our university partners—could they create online courses that would spark this kind of empowerment and transformation? The response was overwhelming.
Today, we’re thrilled to announce the launch of 14 brand-new courses in topics like social justice, diversity, and inclusion, and global challenges. We’ll be launching additional courses in these topics throughout July and August, so stay tuned!
These courses offer a unique opportunity to learn directly from top experts on some of the most difficult issues facing our global society today. You’ll gain a nuanced understanding of topics ranging from climate change, to diversity and inclusion, to mass incarceration; you’ll also build the concrete skills you need to be an effective professional leader and global citizen.
If you take more than one course, you’ll begin to see connections; for example, you’ll understand how and why climate change can lead to increases in conflict and injustice. And you’ll begin to see how, by learning and taking action on just one of these challenges, you can make a meaningful impact on all of them.
Our challenge to you: Jump into these courses, explore the topics in depth, and start applying what you learn in large and small ways in your own communities. Use the hashtag #LearnActImpact to share your stories on Twitter or Facebook, and to connect with other learners taking action around the world—we’ll feature some of these stories on our blog in the coming months.
