Most courses on Coursera can be "audited" free of charge. Auditing a course typically gives you access to all the course materials and discussion forums.

Learners can opt to pay to get the full course experience which includes access to graded assignments and the possibility to earn a course certificate.

Note that Coursera's catalog does still include a large number of courses that are completely free, including the graded assignments although these don't offer a certificate. A small number of Coursera courses are paid only.

If you wish to earn a certificate on Coursera, you'll need to pay. If you cannot afford the fee, you can apply for financial aid: Apply for Financial Aid or a Scholarship

If you opt to pay for the full course experience with a certificate, the cost can vary depending on the course. The price appears in a pop-up when you click the Enroll button. (You must be logged into Coursera to see the price). Courses may be available either on a subscription basis or for individual purchase.

The paid option for an individual course varies depending on the course, but is usually around $50. If the course is offered on a subscription basis, the cost is between US$39-79 per month.

A small number of Coursera courses are paid only.
