How MOOCs Can Help Students Prepare for University

Massive Open Online Courses (more commonly known as MOOCs) are educational courses which are delivered online and are open to a large group of students who all learn the same thing at the same time. MOOCs are often delivered by renowned professors from prestigious universities and they're usually free to access.

A MOOC is the same class a student at a prestigious university would take, with video lessons, readings, assessments, and discussion forums. The difference is that you can learn from your own home at a time that suits you. Learners sign up to MOOCs via MOOC Provider Platforms such as Coursera, EdX, Futurelearn etc

These courses cover a wide range of topics and can be a valuable tool for students looking to go to university by offering a way to try out different fields of interest as well as giving students a firsthand experience of what it might be like to study at the university offering the course. Taking a MOOC can also strengthen an application by showing commitment and interest in the particular area of study to university admissions officials.

In addition to subject-based courses, students can benefit from a variety of study skill courses designed to help prepare for the university experience. Some examples include Preparing for University by The University of East Anglia, Critical Thinking at University: An Introduction by The University of Leeds or Improving Your Study Techniques by The University of Groningen.
