We are pleased to announce that the University System of Maryland has joined edX as a Contributing Charter Member. The new partnership will leverage the University System of Maryland’s experience with online innovation and the technologies of edX platform to improve learning outcomes for the edX global community.
The new partnership brings a university system comprising 12 institutions to edX — including Bowie State University, Coppin State University and University of Maryland Eastern Shore, which will become the first Historically Black College and Universities (HBCUs) to join edX. The system also includes University of Maryland University College (UMUC), a pioneer in delivering online courses globally and developing innovative online learning models for adult students. Together, with edX, USM will expand access to high-quality, for credit courses that offer pathways from MOOCs to on-campus programs and credit.
The first course from USM is offered by UMUC and the University of Maryland, Baltimore. The course, Global Health – The Lessons of Ebola, explores how multidisciplinary teams can work more effectively together to address global health needs and examines why local health issues affect us globally.
Today, international travel and the global economy continue to make the world smaller and smaller. In addition, the changing global environment continues to contribute to the emergence of new diseases and the spread of existing ones. As the world is rapidly shaped and changed by these factors, it is imperative that those in the fields of international development, humanitarian assistance, business and commerce, and healthcare understand how the factors are connected and how teams can come together to address these complex changes.
The launch of this initial course offering from USM marks an exciting step in our partnership. We look forward to bringing more courses from additional USM members to edX learners, furthering our mission of providing access to high-quality education for everyone, everywhere.
