Is there a teacher that’s had a significant impact on your life? Join us in thanking them today on #WorldTeachersDay as we commend educators from all over the world!

World Teachers’ Day, celebrated every October 5 since 1994, is an opportunity to recognize and appreciate teachers for the essential role they play in the development of our global society.

On October 5, 1966, the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers was adopted, a set of guidelines intended to hold educators in higher esteem and stress the importance of quality education. This year’s World Teachers’ Day marks a significant milestone, as it is the 50th anniversary since the adoption of the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation.

Along with celebrating the 50th Anniversary, this year also marks the first World Teachers’ Day since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 2030 Agenda specifically set forth the SDG4 goal, which seeks to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.” The goal was set forth after progress was made but the world failed to meet the Millennium Development Goal of achieving universal primary education by 2015.

Today, 59 million children of primary-school age are out of school, and of those 59 million, 1 in 5 dropped out. Another staggering statistics estimates that of those children who are out of school, 2 out of 5 will never set foot in a classroom. The SDG4 goal seeks to close this gap and ensure every boy and girl is granted access to quality education.

At edX, our mission is to increase access to high-quality education and create a culture of continuous, lifelong learning. We feel exceptionally close to this year’s celebration as we keep the Sustainable Development goal in mind and look to empower teachers and provide them with the resources and knowledge needed to work towards their bigger goal of contributing to the development of our global society.

Thank you teachers for all of your hard work!

We encourage you to explore our education and teacher training courses, we’ve highlighted a subset of upcoming courses below. We also recently announced Michigan’s Leading Educational Innovation and Improvement MicroMasters, which is designed to help teachers and school leaders understand and develop R&D strategies for improving classrooms, schools and educational systems.
