While this course also looks at American government in both a historical and modern context, it emphasizes the ideas upon which the system is based. You’ll read about theories relating to religion, state power, minority rights and more from authors like Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine and W.E.B. Du Bois. This class was originally offered at MIT in 2004, and its materials have been archived so you can work through them at your own pace for free (although you may need to pay for whatever reading material you can’t find at the library). It’s a great way to help you explore your own political opinions!
