The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a new Data Protection regulation which comes into force on 25th May, 2018. The EU's GDPR website says the legislation is designed to "harmonize data privacy laws across Europe, to protect and empower all EU citizens data privacy and to reshape the way organizations across the region approach data privacy."

Individuals, organisations, and companies that are either 'controllers' or 'processors' of the personal data of citizens in the European Union (EU) will have to make sure they are GDPR compliant by May 25th deadline or risk a hefty fine. The new obligations placed on those affected by the regulation include allowing people to have easier access to their data and the requirement for organisations to obtain the consent of people they collect information about.
