Why has Coursera stopped giving a free statement of accomplishments?

Not speaking for Coursera here, since this happened after my time but I personally agree with this decision for the following reasons:

1. Verified Certificates are Coursera's main (currently only?) source of revenue, so eliminating a free alternative that sometimes provides the same value reduces user confusion and adds value to paid VCs.
2. Coursera claims to be generous about financial aid to those who need it.
3. They're providing a free education and access to knowledge. I don't think they should feel obliged to hand out free certificates as well.
