What should I do if I am afraid of programming?

Unfortunately, it sounds to me like you’ve been going about programming in perhaps the wrong way.

If you want to learn golf, think about what is the best way:

  1. Learn how to walk on grass (you probably know that one), learn the aerodynamics of a ball in flight, learn how kinetic energy from a golf club can transfer into the ball and cause the ball to move very quickly. Understand how the ball will roll along very short grass and how it behaves in sand.
  2. Play golf.

Learning algorithms and data structures is learning algorithms and data structures.

If you want to learn to program, you need to learn to program.

There is a lot of fucking awful advice out there on how to learn to program. To learn to program, all you need to do is try to write programs. Do you think you could write Minesweeper? If not, that’s your project. Start now.

If I was to don my amateur psychologist hat for a moment, I’d say you’re not afraid of programming, you’re afraid of failure. It’s very common, and very pointless. If you give up, failure is guaranteed, if you persevere, you will likely succeed.

Start actually programming right now.
