Bob Lang says it all really, yes, it’s completely true.

“Mastering” a language, is almost always a bad idea. I’d even go as far as to say learning a language, and then learning another one is probably a bad idea.

You need to be able to write software, end of story.

I’ve probably worked in about 15 programming languages, to a layman, that sounds impressive, but to a professional developer, it’s not. The number of languages you’ve worked in is actually way less important than you might think.

You need to take one language, and make something good with it.

You don’t need to know all the features of that language, in fact there is a decent argument to be made that using all the features of any language might be a bad idea in terms of readability.

The number of languages you know almost certainly does not matter. Your “mastery” of any given language probably matters less. The only thing that matters as a professional developer, is your ability to produce professional level software.
