We are honored to announce Kiron, a Berlin-based open education start-up with a mission to enable access to free higher education for refugees, to the global community of edX partners.
Since April 2016, Kiron has been working with edX to integrate courses into its learning platform. EdX issues free verified certificates for Kiron students who have successfully completed courses, and those certificates translate to college credit with Kiron’s 41 university partners.
Currently, there are over 2,000 learners from Kiron taking 30 different courses from 13 edX partners.
Headquartered in Berlin, Kiron is dedicated driven by the mission to create equal access to higher education for refugees. Based on a digital and modularized curriculum, students begin their studies online for up to two years. Afterwards, they can transfer to one of Kiron’s partner university, such as Fachhochschule Lübeck, to obtain an accredited bachelor degree.
The first course offered directly by Kiron on edX.org is from Kiron’s partner, Fachhochschule Lübeck. The course, Computer Networks and the Internet, is designed to give learners the knowledge of how computer networks function overall, as well as how they apply to the Internet as a whole. The course is open for enrollment today and starts on June 26, 2017.

This marks an important step in furthering our joint mission of increasing access to high-quality education for everyone, everywhere, and we look forward to sharing news of more courses in the future.
