I would not call them pump-and-dump, but statistics that I have seen suggest that people who benefit from MOOCs already have a solid education. Also, some MOOCs are better than others, and different MOOCs are rarely adjusted to match in topics, notation, overall level, etc. In a formal CS program, courses agree much better, and projects are often deeper.
