Will future generations know always less about hardware and low level programming?

It certainly appears that way.

Looking around on Quora, you don’t see many questions about low level programming, but countless about making web sites etc.

There are countless questions about joining companies like Facebook or Google, but practically none about joining Intel, Oracle, or IBM, all companies doing serious low-level work. Even Microsoft is a second class citizen when it comes to looking for work, and I think that’s because low-level work is considered far less attractive than high level work. I think beginners can imagine what it’s like to work on a web site, it’s aspirational yet attainable. On the other hand, working on the NT or Mach kernel seems like the type of programming that other people do. It must appear entirely unattainable, because for most of us, it probably is.

I think if Quora is representative of newcomers to programming, then there may well be a drought of knowledge in some fields in later years.
