We were never completely on MongoDB -- we mainly used it as a Key-Value store. We migrated off it because we had some performance and stability issues with MongoDB on EC2 EBS (pre-PIOPS) and we didn't want to deal with the overhead of managing a database service by ourselves. RDS MySQL was plenty fast for our purposes back in the day.
Incidentally, we are writing our new services in Cassandra, which we found to be very performant.
