First, I predict that you will see more innovation in scheduling as time goes on. For example, I'm breaking what is usually a one-quarter course (CS161, Design and Analysis of Algorithms) into two five-week pieces (offered initially in the winter and spring quarters, respectively).
Second, there has been at least one big benefit to students of synchronizing a course --- the large community of students that self-organizes in discussion forums and the like around every assignment deadline. Stanford has received a huge amount of positive feedback from students on this point.
