Why did Udacity pivot away from MOOCs to higher-touch offerings?

All based on data.

3 years ago I was on a panel with Bill Gates; the panel focused on MOOCs. Bill made the comment that a 5% completion rate doesn’t make a dent in the world - since 5% of us easily learn from books. This made me think. I believe Bill was right, to change the world we need to be able to educate 95% of the world. And those 95% thrive on personal feedback, mentorship, and individual guidance. So we tried this out and found that our completion rates would often be 10 x as high with higher-touch offerings than with the plain MOOC.

Having said this, we offer MOOCs for all courses - free content. The completion rates here remain abysmal, as they have always been for MOOCs. My recommendation for serious learners is to let us at Udacity help you learn better, and be on your side when you need help!
