Is contributing to GitHub projects the only way a newbie programmer can get a job?

There is too much code in every repo and after going through everything I decide to look for a new project. I am so frustrated and feel like giving up.

That's the reaction I have every time I look at a project. Not even the first time I look at it. Every time.

Programming is all about managing complexity. Some projects are well-designed, making the task much easier. Most projects are poorly designed and require a tremendous effort to work with.

I don't think I'll ever get over the feeling that there's too much code in a project. But in the end, it's still possible to carve out a little piece to work on. Then bite by bite, you eat the whole damn elephant.
