Does it take a lot of hard work to become a programmer?

I once had a boss (one of the best) who had two rules about projects.

  • The first half of the project takes 90% of the time. The second half of the project takes the other 90% of the time.
  • There's never enough time to do it right, but there's (somehow) always enough time to do it again.

What's true about projects is true about the entire industry. If you want to be the dilletante who gives up whenever things get boring or uninteresting, you're not going to get a lot of work, but it's easy. But getting things out the door on time is hard, and it's the sort of work that not many people enjoy.

But, of course, the same is true of any job. Becoming a driver is easy. Becoming a commercial driver who reliably hauls cargo across the country or a cabbie who gets people where they need to be safely and economically both involve a lot of work. Writing an e-mail to a friend is easy. Writing a best-selling novel is hard.
