NTNU is the largest of the eight universities in Norway, and, as its name suggests, has the main national responsibility for higher education in engineering and technology.

In addition to engineering and the natural and physical sciences, the university offers advanced degrees in other academic disciplines ranging from the social sciences, the arts, medicine and health sciences, teacher education, architecture and fine art.

World university rankings can be used as an indicator of a university's prospects and prestige. Ranking publishers use different performance indicators such as teaching quality, research quality or the ratio of staff to students to place higher education institutions in order of success and impact.
