Should I feel bad about buying books when they're available online for free?

No. You are being a patron. Art requires patrons in order to thrive. You should feel proud that you are an essential part of the process. Those books would not exist if there were not enough people willing to pay for them.

When you go to your workplace, you expect to be compensated for the time and effort you contribute. So do writers. They have rent, insurance, utilities, and food to pay for, just like you do. Every person that takes a book for free, instead of paying for it, is taking food from the author’s mouth, heat from their homes, and fuel from their car.

There is no free lunch. We can only have nice things if we acknowledge the value of those things and ensure the creator receives the compensatory equivalent of that value.
