Overview

Code.org® is a non-profit dedicated to expanding access to computer science, and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color. Their mission is to have every student exposed to computer science. Courses are available in 30+ languages and focus primarily on school age kids, although some courses are suitable for all ages.

The site offers two main components for learners: the Hour of Code and Code Studio. The Hour of Code is based on a visual programming environment where you drag and drop instruction blocks in order to move a cartoon character around the screen to achieve a particular goal. The Code Studio is home to a set of tools and curriculum geared at getting young learners interested in coding through lesson plans, unplugged activities, and videos that teach concepts that are then reinforced through programming practice. Some of the concepts are introduced by video clips featuring big names like Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates. School teachers also have the ability to monitor their students’ progress in a lesson.

The site also provides links to other coding tutorial sites geared towards kids and beginners and offers
professional learning programs for teachers to help with teaching computer science across K-12 grades.
