Overview
Learn how to ensure all young people get a chance to explore STEM subjects
Increasing diversity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics is vital, it’s the only way STEM industries can ensure they are addressing the full range of the world’s problems. So how do we improve diversity? One answer: working with young people.

On this course for volunteers and others working with young people, you will learn how to find and adapt resources for STEM activities. You will explore current research on diversity and learning how to engage every young person in practical STEM activities by understanding different audiences and contexts.

This course has been created for anyone volunteering with young people in STEM. This includes STEM Ambassadors in the UK, youth volunteering group organisers, field trip educators, scout groups (and similar), outdoor pursuit centres, outreach from NGOs. You will need knowledge of STEM subjects or experience of working in a STEM environment.

What topics will you cover?
This two-week, self-paced course will introduce you to:
  • What you can do as a volunteer in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) working with young people in schools and non-school settings.
  • How to draw upon special collections of resources to support practical activities in STEM with young people.
  • Working with young people inclusively, with an introduction to special educational needs settings, gender bias, minority and disadvantaged groups.
