It’s a great way to build a portfolio for an entry level position. Suppose you don’t want to participate in an open source project, you don’t have anything to put on your resume to stand out, but you want to get in the data science field. That would be the way to go, because after completing their projects you can show your code and tell your employer about the problems you’ve solved.

It’s also a tool for a smooth transition, say, from software engineering to machine learning. You could go the hard way and find yourself a new job immediately, likely with a drop in salary, or you could start picking up a new set of skills by taking the course. It will be easier for you to make the transition and your case will be more compelling for the manager that makes the decision.

The first case is not necessarily about people with a degree, of course.
