Let me explain through an example.

Say you’re trying to learn about software development in a physical classroom. The quality of your experience would be limited by 4 key things:

  • The structure/pacing of your course materials/outline
  • How fast/slow your classmates can learn software development
  • The mediums available to teach software development in a physical space
  • The depth of knowledge of your teacher in software development

When done correctly, online education has the power to break every single one of these limitations.

It can flip the way we learn completely upside down by ushering in a brand new model.

People sometimes refer to this as the student-led model, which, through technology, gives students the power to get the right content, at the right time, in the right medium.

Let’s return to the software development example to explain how this works.

If you’re learning software development in a 90-minute classroom session and are having trouble understanding a key building block to a complex concept like algorithms, you could do 2 things:

  • Raise your hand and ask a question. The teacher would then need to verbally explain the concept in front of the class to you and you would need to comprehend it without any practice in order to benefit from the rest of the class-time.
  • Dive into your textbook after the class to try to understand it. You could try to get a friendly classmate to help you out with this as well, but you would be limited by their willingness to help and your ability to work with their teaching style.

Now, say you’re learning software development online and are running into the same problem with learning algorithms. In this case, 2 amazing things should happen in order to give you the right content, at the right time, in the right medium.

  • The online platform should immediately identify the exact reason for your problem. It can do this because it’s learned from the millions of students who have experienced the same problem in the past.
  • It should then push you to a path of lessons of varying mediums aimed to make sure that you get over the hump. These should be text-based, video-based, peer-based or mentor-based depending on the ideal medium for learning each specific concept. Each would be 100% optimized to teach you each building block in the best possible way for you.

Online education has evolved a ton over the past few years. And it will continue to evolve as technology becomes more and more advanced.

This is a good thing. Online education democratizes the spread of knowledge. It breaks down the barriers to quality education and opens up the possibility to learn amazing things to anyone with a connection to the internet. And it’s doing it in a better and better way every single day.

I couldn’t be more excited about where the industry is headed.
