Competitive programming helps you learn how to apply the algorithms in "practice", especially how to implement them efficiently and account for all corner cases. Without the books and courses you can never learn the algorithm in the first place. But without actually going out and solving some problems, it's hard to consolidate that knowledge and add it to your arsenal of problem-solving techniques.
