Coursera is a program made by Universities, Udacity is a University made by programmers. This is the important difference.

Udacity has strong links with google as many of its teachers are from google, it runs on google app engine. It seems to be both a training center and a search engine for people with certain skills. All courses are defined by what the students do and have a large hands on component.

Coursera is a mooc repository with a larger spread of classes. It was founded by Stanford teachers as well. (i suspect it has something to do with Dr. Fogg's persuasive tech lab being there.) Coursera is less interactive, but easier to use offline from the courses I have seen.
