Should I feel bad about buying books when they're available online for free?

I savor the feeling of a book in my hand. I love the way the pages feel crisp, with the new spine trying gallantly to maintain its stiffness. New books have a particular smell to them which I relish. They have a dasein which is almost metaphysical.

After some time, these features will fade but that is a reflection of my love. Once a book becomes my favorite, the pages will be dog-eared and the spine will have cracks. My handwriting will be scrawled in the margins denoting the new thoughts the book inspires while I read.

You don’t get that from online books, free or not.

Sometimes, you shouldn't fix something that isn't broken and physical books aren't broken. They are tangible representations of human progress and knowledge. They create jobs and provoke new insights. They change lives and inspire imagination and wonder in children.

Books, physical ones, helped define my life. You shouldn’t feel bad about buying new books. If anything, you should be proud to appreciate something that a lot of people don’t.

Keep buying physical books—you won’t regret it.
