This series of three courses finished its first run on edX at the end of Feb 2015 and I write this review in the earnest hope and expectation that it will be repeated.

The courses are provided by Columbia University and presented by Eric Foner, one of the leading authorities on the Civil War and reconstruction period of US history. The courses each run over eight or nine weeks with around 1.5 - 2 hours of lectures per week. The three courses basically cover the run up to the war, the war itself and then reconstruction.

The lectures are filmed straight from his on campus course although, as most will be pleased to hear, they are edited into more user-friendly 10-15 minute segments. There are also additional discussions between Eric and Tim Shenk (a graduate student at Columbia who acts as chief teaching assistant for the courses). As is common in edX courses, there are also other elements included such as original source documents and images.

The assessment is based on weekly quizzes and a final exam (for each course) with the 60/40 weighting in favour of the weekly quizzes. The pass mark is 70%, which is not difficult if you pay reasonable attention--but don't do as I did and mix up my dates in the last two weeks of the third course and miss two assessments and the final! Verified certificates are available and the courses also form a XSeries--which means you can earn an overall certificate for completing all three on a verified basis.

The course is presented in perfectly standard edX format so if you have taken a there course before, you know what to expect and if you haven't, well, you'll soon get used to it! Alternatively, you could take the short edX 'Demo' course which introduces the various features.

So much for the technicalities. Simply put, this sequence of courses represents one of the best learning experiences in which I have had the privilege to participate. Professor Foner is authoritative yet relaxed in style and not adverse to introducing a little humour even at the grimmest points of the narrative. He has a clear view on the causes and effects of the civil war with which some may be uncomfortable at the outset but he makes a convincing, not to say inarguable, case. Those who come into the course with a romanticised view of the Southern states and the Confederacy will surely find such views challenged. Equally, reconstruction is tackled head on challenging stereotypical views of 'carpetbaggers' while facing up to the problems and ultimate failure of the period.

Eric Foner is a natural and engaging speaker. The lectures are well-paced covering a lot of ground without getting too caught up in minutiae but always have time to explore interesting asides and some personal stories. If nothing else, students should leave the course appreciating that while the situation was complex with many shades or grey, Professor Foner is clear in his belief that the casus belli was ultimately one simple issue: the 'peculiar institution' of slavery.

I should, for the sake of balance, add a few caveats. As is common in most MOOCs, the assessment is far from rigorous, assuming you keep up to date there is no reason why most students should not achieve a good pass. The discussions with Tim Shenk do not always flow as easily as they might although this may simply be because of the contrast with Foner's relaxed speaking style in lectures. The discussion forums are quite lively but there were some students with very entrenched positions who could be rather tedious and repetitive--on the other hand there were some whose knowledge of the topic was so such as to be quite intimidating (not something I normally experience). Finally, those whose interests are primarily military may find the courses less satisfying. Eric's interests lie primarily in the political and social aspects of war and his coverage of the conflict itself is fairly broad brush.

My recommendation, bookmark these courses now ready for the next run (or enrol in the archived version and enjoy the content without the stress of worrying about assessments or certificates).

Algorithms: Design and Analysis, Part 1

4b9a27f7ca854bbd9a245d55310bc727.course_card.png

In this course you will learn several fundamental principles of algorithm design. You'll learn the divide-and-conquer design paradigm, with applications to fast sorting, searching, and multiplication. You'll learn several blazingly fast primitives for computing on graphs, such as how to compute connectivity information and shortest paths. Finally, we'll study how allowing the computer to "flip coins" can lead to elegant and practical algorithms and data structures. Learn the answers to questions such as: How do data structures like heaps, hash tables, bloom filters, and balanced search trees actually work, anyway? How come QuickSort runs so fast? What can graph algorithms tell us about the structure of the Web and social networks? Did my 3rd-grade teacher explain only a suboptimal algorithm for multiplying two numbers?

Statistics One

4b9a27f7ca854bbd9a245d55310bc727.course_card.png

  • 4 star rating
  • 19 Reviews
  • Free

Statistics One is designed to be a comprehensive yet friendly introduction to fundamental concepts in statistics. Comprehensive means that this course provides a solid foundation for students planning to pursue more advanced courses in statistics. Friendly means exactly that. The course assumes very little background knowledge in statistics and introduces new concepts with several fun and easy to understand examples.

This course is, quite literally, for everyone. If you think you can't learn statistics, this course is for you. If you had a statistics course before but feel like you need a refresher, this course is for you. Even if you are a relatively advanced researcher or analyst, this course provides a foundation and a context that helps to put one’s work into perspective.

Statistics One also provides an introduction to the R programming language. All the examples and assignments will involve writing code in R and interpreting R output. R software is free! What this means is you can download R, take this course, and start programming in R after just a few lectures. That said, this course is not a comprehensive guide to R or to programming in general.

This course will introduce you to some of the main areas of research in contemporary philosophy. Each week a different philosopher will talk you through some of the most important questions and issues in their area of expertise. We’ll begin by trying to understand what philosophy is – what are its characteristic aims and methods, and how does it differ from other subjects? Then we’ll spend the rest of the course gaining an introductory overview of several different areas of philosophy. Topics you’ll learn about will include: * Epistemology, where we’ll consider what our knowledge of the world and ourselves consists in, and how we come to have it; * Philosophy of science, where we’ll investigate foundational conceptual issues in scientific research and practice; * Philosophy of Mind, where we’ll ask questions about what it means for something to have a mind, and how minds should be understood and explained; * Moral Philosophy, where we’ll attempt to understand the nature of our moral judgements and reactions – whether they aim at some objective moral truth, or are mere personal or cultural preferences, and; * Metaphysics, where we’ll think through some fundamental conceptual questions about the nature of reality. The development of this MOOC has been led by the University of Edinburgh's research centre.

The Biology of Water and Health - Part 1

  • 4 star rating
  • 6 Reviews
  • Free
This course from Tufts University examines increasingly critical water-related issues through a distinctly global and interdisciplinary lens.

In Part 1 of the course, you will explore the multi-faceted ways in which water and human health are interrelated, including the influence of waterborne pathogens on public health and the central role of water quantity and quality in preserving health through adequate sanitation and hygiene.

The unique interdisciplinary approach of this course gives the general public, as well as health professionals in a variety of fields, a provocative introduction to the public health and human engineering components involved in the provision of safe water and sanitation. It provides an interdisciplinary framework for understanding the place of water in health policy and engineering by helping participants give informed voice to the ways in which water is involved in social interactions, belief systems, and the economics of an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world.

Part 2 of this course, focusing on creating sustainable interventions for safe water, will begin on Tuesday, September 29, 2015.

This course is the first in a 2-part series that will be offered in 2014-2015 by Tufts University. All course content is openly licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike license. After the conclusion of the course, materials will be available through edX as well on the Tuft University Open Courseware website.

Constitutional Struggles in the Muslim World will run again this coming October. Dr. Afsah is an extraordinary instructor at Copenhagen. His course provides the kind of historical background that allows those of us, in the Western world particularly, to better understand the diverse cultures , their goals, and their perspectives, all of which contribute to the strife in the Middle East.

I started the year 2015 taking two Coursera classes : Galaxies and Cosmology and Information Theory. I ended up dropping both due to some health problems - now resolved.

I plan to take Coding the Matrix: Linear Algebra through Computer Science Applications (starts 2 Feb) and Introduction to Clinical Neurology although I will likely only stay with one of those two. I just added Understanding the Brain: The Neurobiology of Everyday Life I have also been working hard to crunch through Khan Academy math skills. I am going to apply to graduate schools later this year and I want to refresh my rusty skills. I also am going to try Calculus One via Coursera.

In 2015, I also want to complete the specialization Perception, Action and the Brain so when a session of Perception, Action and the Brain Final Project is offered, I will take that.

I have taken a few other classes via EdX and Udacity, so I will keep an eye on them as well. I did not know about iVersity, thanks to Simon, now I do. I will check it out.

My planning horizon for classes is only a few months out. MOOCs are like cosmology, it is an expanding universe.

Colin,
When do you plan on starting Calculus One? I would like to start soon.

"Unlocking the Immunity to Change" at edX last year was truly amazing. The quality of the lectures and the course materials were excellent, and so were the "live" sessions with the Staff.
The course was structured around a personal self-improvement goal, and it ended up changing many of the students lives (including mine) for the better. Simply brilliant.

I don't know if it will be made available again, but I really hope so!
