For many fields, you can also find the preprint server, which has published articles for free. Different fields do this differently, but at least in physics you can go to www.arxiv.org and get nearly every published article from the past twenty years or so and many that aren't published in refereed journals. It was specifically designed to give people access to journal papers that have been accepted before they showed up in print, and needless to say access is free.
I am not sure what you are interested or whether or not your field has something similar, but you can try and find a preprint server for your respective field. ArXiv has sections for physics, math, statistics, quantitative bio, finance, computer science.
