Chris Moses, a 2010 MIT SB in Brain & Cognitive Sciences, told me recently that he took the Coursera Data Science course to teach himself how to develop algorithms. He completed it, and used the knowledge to help develop the algorithms behind his company, Smart Scheduling, which went through our MIT GFSA Accelerator for student startups in 2012 and was recently accepted into the AthenaHealth Accelerator: A high tech cure for doctors’ scheduling pains - The Boston Globe
So, I guess, yeah, he landed a job - because he went out there and created one from scratch.
Disclaimers: Chris is a badass, I work for MIT, and I now run the GFSA Accelerator at MIT (but didn't when he went through the program)
