The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is the most serious global health threat in recent times, and restrictions are impacting the lives of millions of students with universities and schools having to shut down to try and contain the spread of virus. In the light of the situation, online education companies are stepping in to ensure students continue to have access to education through MOOCs - Massive Open Online Courses.
Coursera is providing every university in the world impacted by COVID-19 with free access to their course catalogue through Coursera for Campus. Through the scheme, universities can sign up to provide their enrolled students with access to more than 3,800 courses and 400 Specializations from Coursera’s university and industry partners. These institutions will have access until July 31, 2020, after which month-to-month extensions will be provided depending on prevailing risk assessments. edX has launched the Remote Access Program, an initiative designed to help the edX partner community address the challenges they are facing, by providing their students with free access to courses and programs not just from their own universities, but from all edX partners participating in the initiative, helping students continue to learn online even as campuses close. With FutureLearn Campus, FutureLearn is allowing their university partners to give their current students and staff unlimited access to the online short courses they deliver through the platform, with free access to premium features. More information can be found here.
FutureLearn has also launched FutureLearn Schools, which will give high school students free upgraded access to over a hundred relevant short courses on the platform, in order to support their learning and expand their horizons. The initiative has been developed in collaboration with existing FutureLearn partners and new strategic partners, Tes and Pearson.
