  • The Open University was the world’s first successful distance teaching university, founded on the belief that communications technology could bring high quality degree-level learning to people who had not had the opportunity to attend traditional campus universities.

The Open University’s mission is to be open to people, places, methods and ideas. We promote educational opportunity and social justice by providing high-quality university education to all who wish to realise their ambitions and fulfil their potential. Through academic research, pedagogic innovation and collaborative partnership we seek to be a world leader in the design, content and delivery of supported open learning.

    Supported open learning

The OU teaches through its own unique method of distance learning, called ‘supported open learning’, which is:
    • Flexible – students work where and when they choose to fit in with jobs, families and other commitments
    • All-inclusive – students get all the high quality materials they need to study
    • Supportive – personal tutors provide academic expertise, guidance and feedback and run group tutorials; and specialist advisers are on hand to help with other aspects of OU study
    • Social – students get together at tutorials, day schools and informal study groups; and through online conferencing, study networks and course forums.

  • How much will it cost?
Your Open University qualification will be made up of a series of modules. Every module has a fee and added together, they give you the total cost of the qualification. You'll pay for each module separately, rather than paying for the whole qualification in advance.
Our fee for a standard 30-credit module is £1,432, and for a standard 60-credit module it's £2,864*. Most of our students study 60 credits per year over six years for an honours degree.
Our costs are transparent so you know what's expected from the outset of your studies. Study materials, tuition and assessment and exams are all included in our fees. See additional costs for other expenses you may need to plan for.

    Paying for your studies
You'll pay for your study when you register for each module, with a tuition fee loan, a credit or debit card or via bank transfer.
Everything about studying with us is flexible including payment options. More than 60% of students studying with us in England take out a student loan to pay for their studies. Alternatively you could pay for your studies in instalments, spreading the cost to 'pay as you go'.
There are other ways you could pay for your studies too: if you work, you might be able to secure funding from your employer. Our Finance Finder will tell you more.

    Interested in second degree funding?

Student loans are now available to study a second degree part-time in a range of subjects.
