Imperial College London has announced the launch of a free online course explaining the science behind the response to the novel coronavirus (COVID19) outbreak.

Featuring experts from the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis (MRC Centre) and Abdul Latif Jameel Institute for Disease and Emergency Analytics (J-IDEA), “Science Matters: Let’s talk about COVID19” (available on Coursera) will provide updates on the current state of the epidemic while also explaining the epidemiological and public health principles that underpin their work, with content being developed in real-time as more information becomes available.

Professor Helen Ward, Professor of Public Health in the School of Public Health, said: “Responding to an emerging infection such as this novel Coronavirus is a major challenge for health systems and the public, but also for scientists carrying out rapid research to provide evidence-based solutions."

Imperial’s “Science Matters” is a new educational programme providing opportunities for learning in real-time as the outbreak and the science develop. This will be valuable for people wanting topical updates, but then delving into the underpinning research in epidemic modelling, public health and clinical research.”

Tackling Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak through online education
Imperial's “Science Matters: Let’s talk about COVID19” course adds to what is likely to be a growing library of open content available online. The learning team of the World Health Organization (WHO) Health Emergencies Programme worked with technical experts to quickly develop and publish an online course on 26 January – 4 days before the 2019-nCoV outbreak was declared a public health emergency of international concern. This course is available on WHO’s open learning platform for emergencies, OpenWHo_Org

Alison, one of the world’s largest free learning platforms, announced the creation of a short Certificate course in early February. The course is strictly based on advice and guidelines provided by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Earlier this week, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine launched “COVID-19: Tackling the Novel Coronavirus” which is open for enrolment on the FutureLearn platform.

In response to the challenges faced by students in China, the University of Michigan School of Information is offering them three of their most popular data science Specializations essentially free on Coursera. The three Specializations - Python for Everybody, the most popular Specialization on Coursera; Python 3 Programming; and Applied Data Science with Python will be available for the next six months for $1 a month to students from China.
