Types of free Open Educational Resources (OER)

A short overview of the types of OER recommeneded in the CLEP Study Programs

Scheduled MOOC

A MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) is a short course that is delivered online for free. There are no entry requirements and the course is open to anyone anywhere in the world with an internet connection. MOOCs often have designated forums where students can interact with each other and staff. They also usually have some form of evaluation such as quizzes and assignments which can be auto-graded or reviewed by course peers.

Typically, MOOCs are "scheduled" meaning that they have a start and an end date. If you wish to study a MOOC that has ended, you usually can add it to your watch-list to be notified when the next session is due to start.

On-demand MOOC

On-demand MOOCs are open at all times allowing students to start and finish the course on their own schedule. These courses are typically self-paced with less social interaction with peers and staff than a scheduled MOOC

Online Course

For the purposes of MoocLab's CLEP Study Programs, an Online Course can be described as a single or a collection of short videos on a particular topic or theme that is delivered online, but doesn't require enrollment nor have the social learning features of a MOOC. Here, online courses are on-demand and self-paced.

Open Courseware

Open Courseware (OCW) is a term used for core teaching materials used in graduate and undergraduate university classes made openly available online at no cost. Open Courseware may include text-based documents, audio and video files, lecture notes, podcasts etc
